As others have noted, ear buds allow a lot of ambient noise in so we turn the volume up to frown it out, but that just does damage to your inner ear and causes permanent hearing loss, often accompanied by ringing tinnitus.
The lawn mower itself is ALSO loud enough to damage your hearing, so if you're trying to drown out that noise, you're definitely turning the volume too loud and will have noise induced hearing loss before long.
Ideally, you should just wear hearing protection, like the muffs you get at the hardware store, when mowing the lawn. The best noise protection is when you wear BOTH foam ear plugs with over-the-ear muffs.
If you feel you absolutely HAVE TO listen to music while mowing, I'd suggest getting custom fitted earphones, or if you can't afford them there are other sound isolating, in the ear products. Then you can put the noise protection muffs over them. That way you have the reduction of the inserts as well as the muffs.

Ear buds will damage your ears faster. Get yourself a set of large head phones - the kind that cover the entire ear. These will sshut out noise of the mower and at the same time allow you to turn down the volume.

Yeah, large studio-type headphones are great. I mostly use them for recording and mixing, but they're good for isolation, which allows you to hear better in loud environments.
But really, it's gonna be hard to listen to music while mowing the lawn no matter what, and cranking the music that loud could damage your ears (although I shouldn't talk, I'm a drummer).

ear buds are really inefficient as headphones. If you REALLY want quality you should get the kind that fit completely over your ear and include some sort of amplifyer.
I'd suggest buying a new pair of earphones that didn't come with your player. Drop 20-30 bucks on them and you should be fine.

Probably the ear phones would be better actually, ear buds are all the time falling out not to mention they hurt your ears,or they do mine.

haha, this is actually a problem for me when i run. this might be hard to visualize. instead of pointing the cord section of the bud straight down, tilt it tword your face, for some reason this triples that sound i hear from my ipod.
