The Arab nations initiated four wars against Israel:

1948 War of Independence
1956 Sinai War
1967 Six Day War
1973 Yom Kippur War
Israel defended itself each time and won. After each war Israeli army withdrew from most of the areas it captured. This is unprecedented in World history and shows Israel's willingness to reach peace even at the risk of fighting for its very existence each time anew.

The land that Israel has was promised to the Arabs by Great Britain in return for their help in fighting the Turks during WWI. However, the Zionist movement convinced Lord Balfour of Great Britain to go back on the deal, creating the necessary conditions to make it possible for the Zionists to have their homeland. When the Arabs found this out, they were pissed and we now have the whole problem today -- Great Britain handed it off to the UN, the UN saw the mess and decided to create 2 lands, and the Zionists were victorious. This is why the arabs are annoyed. However, the whole region has been taken over for millenia - the jews took it, the ottoman empire took it from the jews, etc. So ... it depends on where you put the stake in the ground of history.

it's conveniently located. hezbollah just managed their longest range attack... 18 whole miles!

you see, this is why we had to take the fight to them! their weapons won't make it across the atlantic. maybe we'll do korea next.

israel has no right to some of the areas it captured. that might also be related. it took 400 years for the irish to get over it when england did it. let's see... that'll be 2373.

tell you what... should the english have nuked ireland when it was being intractable? it would have made it a lot easier to control! or scotland!! but then we would have never had the movie braveheart.

how about it? what's different here? are we better off with the scots? are we glad the english didn't obliterate them? this question isn't new...

Because that very first war, 1948, was initiated by the brutal invasion of an Arab country, where the Palestinians who had their own nation for hundreds of years, lived to create Israel.

There has been religious warfare in the Middle East since before the Crusades. Islamic Extremists are the least tolerant religion in history. They refuse to tolerate any infidel - non believer. For years every time Israel asked for negotiations another bus, or shopping center filled with innocent people got blown up. They are also killing people in India, Russia and Indonesia. So who are the bad guys? India, Russia and Indonesia have nothing to do with Israel or the "West" so there goes that excuse. In a world with 6+ billion people there just isn't room for people who want to kill anyone who doesn't share their religious beliefs.

Israel occupies a piece of land that was formerly occupied by the Palestines, Arabs, the Palestines were relocated to the Gaza strip, one of the most densly polpulated ares on earth. In addition to that Isreal is urounded by other Arab nations, who tend to stick together especialy against "infadels".

the grounds for israel's claim to this land reaches very deeply into the history of our modern species. Arab notions do not accept the religious notion that god has set this land aside for the jewish people. tribal human behaviors tends to revolve around a need for such tribal citizens to 'identify' themselves in contexts which clearly define who we are and who we are not. the excluding characteristic of tribal behaviors is well known throughout history and well know within the american experience. .. the american experimant has at its core the evolutionary principle of ever challenging itself to become as inclusive as it can withstand. it quite possibly is our greatest achievement. as a people we try to better ourselves this way. the arabs are stuck in the past. like senior citizen drivers, the world is moving by them too fast.

if you read the new york times at all, i recommend tom friedmans recurrent oped column.

It is becasue the Arabs fight for selfish reasons and not for the sake of allah. Also they choose Democracy over the islamic teachings. Also they don't care about the teachings of islam so Allah is allowing them to be punish the same way the jews were punished back in the past.

It all started with Abraham. He preferred one son over the other. This began the biggest sibling rivalry that is creating problems today.
