This sounds like a SMART self test error for a hard drive in an HP or a Compaq. Odds are your hard drive is failing. If you know the manufacturer your drive you can download diagnostic cd or floppy images which you can use to make a floppy or CD to boot your PC with and test the drive.

Wow, this was a tough one to tackle. Had to drag all my experience out on this one. You have a hard drive fault. Check the cables for looseness, and make sure the power supply connection is securely inserted. Next, if that doesn't work, then try replacing the IDE or SATA (depending on your hard drive) cable. If that still doesnt work, then you can try one of two things. It's unlikely to be the power supply, but it's less expensive than buying a new hard drive, which is the second option. Hope this helps. If you need any further assistance, then you can contact me at my listed email. Good luck. (by the way, you can disable the automatic restart function from the menu you use to select safe mode. Might help with some trouble shooting.

HD521-2 error means that your hard drive failed the short test ( that test is performed everytime the computer is turmed on - booted). The only "fix" is to replace the hard drive.

If the HDD will spin the data can be taken from the hdd. best and easiest way to do this or at least try, is to buy a external case for the hdd then attach it to the new comp and drag and drop from one hdd to another.

Unsure what your issue is, but that error seems fairly specific to HP/Compaq systems. if your system is one of these, try their website or tech support.
It seems to pertain to a failing hard disk specifically.
