Yes, I know she needs to eat more hay and that kind of stuff....but she just doesn't want to eat it. Of course she is a pig and eats everything on her path.....but she totally avoids the hay and teh thymoty grass. For a while she decided she wanted to eat rocks from the garden...;I noticed it when rocks started to come out in her poop.

This site is pretty thorough: http://home.earthlink.net/~rednine/sulcatacare.html

I DO know that lettuce and spinach are bad for them... There's a great diet included on the site.

You will need a large area outside with a very strong fence.

The food you are feeding is all WRONG. Sulcatas are dry grasslands torts & eat mainly grass, hay, weeds. Mulberry leafs are good. If you must feed grocery type food use chicory, endive, greens. Little to no fruit. Anythign at petsmart is probably not good for it. Mazuri dry tortoise food is acceptable as a part of a VARIED diet.

Did you know that Sulcata's were the 3rd largest species in the world? They regularly get over 100 lbs and 2 feet long, often hitting nearly 3 feet and 300 lbs!

Did you know they need huge OUTDOOR enclosures and a lot of food?

Sulcatas shold eat about 50% 'fodder'- hay, clover, alfalfa, flowers, grasses, yard plants, etc., either fresh or dried. Your diet is WAY to 'soft' for her and does not have enough fiber and is weak on other nutrients.

A good diet site is http://www.petdoc.ws/TortDiet.html.

Some good pages on caring for Sulcatas are:
http://tortoise.org/archives/sulcata1.html
http://tortoise.org/archives/sulcata2.html
http://tortoise.org/archives/sulcata3.html
http://tortoise.org/archives/sulcfeed.html

Sulcatas are often abandoned or sold when they get big, or become horribly deformed from malnutrition as keepers find it harder and harder to care for them.

This is just meant as a 'head's up' warning. These giants are great animals... IF you are ready for them!

Just that I hope you have a big space for her. My friends have a sulcata that has grown too big for them to pick up in just a few years (he's not even 5 yet). They feed him bagged organic salad greens and romaine plus dry hay-like stuff (I know because I'm their pet sitter). They don't feed him much fruit as far as I know and he is very healthy. Glad to hear your girl is recovering.
