It most likely is your hard drive making the noise. If it just started happening, it may be a sign that the hard drive is getting ready to fail. If it has always made the noise, do not worry.

I was ready to go buy another laptop because of the constant clicking! After reading these answers, realized I had an exercise disk in, removed it, and no more clicking!

It could either be your fan turning on and off, or maybe if you have a cd in the drive it will sometimes spin to check if the disc is there.

the gerbel wheel that makes yer computer run is hitting another piece of metal. take it to a local computer store and have the gerbal wheel replaced or corrected...good luck.
