george washington.

i say that because he was the first and he set the standard. people begged him to run for a third term because he did such a good job, but he believed that the nation needed constant infusions of new blood and so he refused. he could have been a king had he wished, and many people begged him to lead the nation. but that would not have been in line with his beliefs for the country. and those were what he held dear. he was elected unanimously twice.

and because he actually led troops and fought in our revolutionary war. he lost some battles, but he had the balls to fight himself for what he believed in. he sent no children into battle in his place.

and so that is why i think he is the best. he did more than win wars or simply act like a president. he forged our nation with his hands and gave it to us as the children of freedom. no other president has had a harder task or more at stake. lincoln comes in as a close second, but he only held the nation together; he did not sculpt it from nothing with blood and fire.

Mine would have to be Franklin Delano Roosevelt. He helped the country out of one of it's darkest days, the Great Depression.

I question why many say Abraham Lincoln. I agree that it was him that won the Civil War with the Confederation, but the whole Emancipation thing was a means to an end. In fact, it only outlawed slavery in the Confederate States. It wasn't until a while after the Civil War ended that the 13th Amendment was passed. And it was that amendment that truly freed the slaves all over the United States.

In my opinion, the greatest president would have to be Teddy Roosevelt. He was a democrat that ran as a republican and won. This made it possible for him to do something which is practically unheard of nowadays....he persisted on issues that were beneficial to the American public instead of following party lines. I would also have to choose Lincoln solely for the fact that he had in his cabinet men from across his political paradigm which showed a real sense of leadership and understanding.
( by the way Lincoln did not care to abolish slavery. Slavery was an economic conspiracy between the north and south - in an address he gave to congress he stated that "if he could have the nation together and still have slavery then so be it".)

I would have to say President Reagan. He helped to guide this country out of a near depression. The thing that says it all is the hostages that President Carter could not get released, but where released as soon as Reagan was sworn in. That is power. He fought the cold war to conclusion and brought hope to the Eastern Block countries and gave their freedom back. He lead the US back into a firmer economic growth cycle.

Calvin Coolidge.. 1923-1929.

Coolidge was "distinguished for character more than for heroic achievement," wrote a Democratic admirer, Alfred E. Smith. "His great task was to restore the dignity and prestige of the Presidency when it had reached the lowest ebb in our history ... in a time of extravagance and waste...."

Who else does this remind you of. This kind of spirit will be needed by the new incumbent in 2008. Will be hard because I don't see one.

Andy, are you really that naive? Irangate,, Contras. God we have some blinkered people here.

Ronald Reagan ended the Cold War. Unlike FDR, the circumstances weren't thrust upon him externally (FDR is a "great" President simply because he happened to be in charge during an exceptional time) but rather Reagan created his circumstances. It was his policy that bankrupted the USSR and brought an end to decades-old tensions. Don't believe that he was the greatest President? Research the Achille Lauro incident. As Reagan said at the time, "We did it all by our little selves."

Great man, great President.

I want to say JFK, but he got cut down before he could really get into full swing. Teddy Roosevelt was pretty darn good too, and Lincoln, but I think, Thomas Jefferson would be my personal choice. He had the foresight to purchase the Louisiana Territory, thus growing our country and he helped shape the tone of our government and the freedoms that our citizens would enjoy.

Well I'm one of the few who likes George Bush... but I believe the greatest president was probably Abe Lincoln for the Emancipation Proclamation.
