They're all about the same for the bio science stuff but if you want the best graphics and visuals the XPS is the hands down winner. Don't know if you're into gaming as well but if you are, don't even CONSIDER anything other than the XPS. That thing is built for 3 things: Graphics, Gaming and Media. All of them are about equal across the board for all the other things. Also, if you DON'T decide on the XPS make SURE that you get the Intel Duo processor as an option. I just up graded to that on my laptop from the P4 2.8GHz and it's a night and day difference in speed. It also runs a lot cooler which keeps you laptop from heating up so bad. (You probably already know that they're notorious for that!) Dell actually builds real good machines. Superior to most and their prices are a lot better but the downside to Dell is tech support. If you're pretty puter savvy then it's a non-issue but if you're not and you try to call in for tech support I suggest that you learn to speak India's native language because you're never going to understand "Punjab's" English on the other end of your conversation.

Good Luck on your Degree Plan!

I would get the HP dv200t, you can use your student discount on their webpage. HP, and Dell have the best warranties, I almost got the sony sz but their warranty doesnt help any if you drop it. I found the HP to be the cheapest with a student discount and running comparable internal hardware.

okay, i'm a college freshman as well... and i'd suggest the new macbook, which can run both windows and mac os x... why would you need mac os x? its more stable, does not need an antivirus, has a lot of features and softwares that are included.. you can literally start working right away instead of buying other stuff and spending time trying to make it work.... and if you need to run a windows only application, you can install xp... sorry if i sound like a mac commercial, i just can't help sharing my discovery. i'm a recent switcher (from pc to mac) and have loved every minute of it... check out an apple store if there's one near you so you can see for yourself...

How much are you looking to spend because in all actuality, for regular school applications, unless they list something specific you really need or have to have for a class, any of those will do just fine. Any modern laptop should give you more than enough power to to basic school stuff without giving you any problems. More important than anything is, if you want to game with it, get a dedicated video card or a chipset that has dedicated memory. If it does, that should be plenty for your needs. No need to spend googobs of money on something you're only going to be doing basic things with.

If you are looking for a laptop for Biological stuff get one that has an ajustable camera/camcoder to record your findings, etc. There is a Sony Vaio that has an ajustaable camcoder, but I dont know what model it is. There is also the Macbook pro that has a camcorder. Check pcrichards or apple.

Dell. It's inexpensive, great for a student. Sony is too expensive. HP may be ok.

Toshiba is rather the worst gadget you need to purchase. A Toshiba is in e-device in hide! The freeze and there instantaneous enjoying cards are crap. they have actually the worst problematic drives money can purchase. i in my opinion might get a Dell, yet considering that's no longer aside of the equation, get between the HP's.
