Thinking about driving cross country and thought about taking US Route 6 the entire way. I know it goes through towns, but I think it is a good way to see the country.

Charlie has a sane answer. Here's mine:

My best time SF-NY was 56 hours. That was back in 55mph days and I stopped for 4 hours a museum on the way. But it was on I-80.

So total driving time, off-interstate, but with some >55 speeds nowadays? About 60 hours.

A reasonable week of lesiurely travel. Or a serious 2.5 days of "You pee, I'll pump, we'll switch roles in 300 miles, drive-through-the-night." kind of driving.

I've enjoyed taking more backroads in the last two decades. But your progress across North America is a lot slower and more demanding than on the Interstate system. You may well have a better time, but be prepared for a slower pace.

3,652 miles of interesting towns, coast to coast. Take your time, and enjoy. More fun than Route 66. It runs all the way from P-Town, MA. ot Long Beach, CA. Expensive gas, but a great trip in a motor-home, where you have a bathroom, and can eat, sleep, and watch TV, have a barbecue anywhere along the way. To really enjoy it, take it slow and easy..Like 10 days or less. It's over 60 hours of driving!

It all depends on how many stops you make along the way and how long you can drive in one day. If your goal really is to "see the country" then I would suggest planning on a whole week and driving about eight hours a day - four in the morning and four in the evening. This would be just about right since mapquest estimates total travel time non-stop is just under 45 hours and that is using interstate highways.
