although jpgs typically have more detail, they're not as efficient as gifs. If it's images, go with gifs. If it's photos, go with jpgs

Jpeg is just one standard format for web pages. There is also bitmap (BMP) and gif.
Bitmap is probably a lower quality format. Not allowing as many colours as jpeg.
Gif allows for transparent images or transparent parts of images.
Choose the format that best suits your needs. Do not just say jpeg is the best therefore I will not look at another format.

BMPs aren't used on websites and aren't well suited for them. They are as high-quality as anything, supporting 16 million+ colors, but they're huge.
GIFs aren't too good. For small, simple images they were the standard, but PNG is better now for those purposes -- more detail per file size, and more options.

I believe so, yes, because I read somewhere that they take less time to download, so anyone viewing your website doesn't have to wait forever for the page to load. They are also higher quality than .gif images.
