No you don't look helpless!!! Your neighboor was probably just trying to be helpful if anything.
It would be the same as if you were carrying grocery bags or somethings, and 1 item fell out of your bag ....some guy would run over to pick it up for you...simply because you are a " Women "....I think they feel like they are supposed to do that

I agree with everyone else who said he just wanted an excuse to come over.
But this begs the question - What nefarious activity were you up to that required you change the tags on your van? Hmmmmm?

lol... I was jump starting my car with the help of a couple of girlfriends once. A man called to us from maybe 12 feet away and asked if we needed help. We told him politely that we were OK, but he came over anyway and actually wrenched the cables out of my hands. (He then proceeded to hook them up the wrong way, but that's another story...)
I'm all for gentlemanliness and the offer of help was appreciated, but I'm not actually helpless!
Maybe this neighbor just saw an opportunity to strike up a conversation with you?

He was probably looking for an excuse to enjoy a few moments of your attention. Don't take it as a negative.......sometimes people are a bit awkward when they attempt to get someone's attention, and fall back onto stereotypical actions in order to achieve their goal.

It may have been just a neighborly gesture of friendship, why are you so upset about it? Haven't there been times when you've given someone a hand without being asked?

Perhaps he was trying to be polite, or maybe the guy likes you. I'd cut him a little slack, some people are just like that with everyone.

Maybe it wasn't the tags he was after, maybe he just wanted to screw you.

Even if he had poor motives, he tried to do something nice for you. Not every guy is willing to be that helpful.
It was probably just a nice guesture on his part.
