The anwer given in the book is 7. I know the formula (d= abs. value of Ax+By+C divided by the squ. rt. of Asquared+Bsquared), but for the life of me I'm just not getting seven. What am I doing wrong?

PS, what is "y" in this situation in the equation of the line? That's where I'm messing up.

Just think about what this graph looks like.
x + 1 = 0, so x = -1
x = -1 is a vertical line. The point on x = -1 that is closest to the point (6,2) will have the same y-value as your given point
So the point closest to (6,2) that lies on the line x = -1 is
(-1,2)
The distance between (6,2) and (-1,2) is just the distance between the x-values (because the y-values are the same).
6 - (-1) = 7.
You do not need to use the formula.

Note: The coefficient of y is zero because there is no y term.

you need to explain this problem better.

please write the problem instructions verbatim.

EDIT:
ok, distance formula.

x + 1 = 0 implies that x ALWAYS = -1, right.

so the distance between x = -1 and (6,2) [where x = 6, right?] is 6 - (-1) = 7.

You can ignore the y terms, since the shortest distance between a point and a line is the perpendicular which joins them. In this case, the perpendicular will be y = 2, and in the distance formula, the y terms will cancel.

your question is really confusing because you're not giving us some information somewhere, but I will try and explain what "y" means in a linear equation

the basic linear equation is represented as follows:

y = 2x + 3

where x is the slope of the line and y is equal to the place where the line crosses the y-axis, or the y-intercept. In the example above the line would cross the y-axis at 3.

7 is the distance between the point (6,2) and the line x+1=0

Wait, is this your homework? Just kidding.

I would sugguest writing the whole formula down, with the variables filled in, and redo it. Remember also:
-Always read over the question carefully
-Don't work to get it done, work to understand it
-If you don't understand, look at the question from a different perspective.
-If you are frustrated, take a break, then come back to it later with fresh eyes
-Work in a comfortable space, as it may help you think clearer
-Never hesitate to ask for help
Good Luck!
