In many circles it simply determines your social status. In many cities, you don't need a higher education to receive a respectable job, but people do not want to associate with the "uneducated."

It's very important. Without higher education people can not get their foot in the door for white collar jobs of any sort. And it isn't just status, you learn more in your 4-10 years in higher ed. than you have in all the rest of your schooling, or at least you learn my things that are usefull in your chosen career.

It's a must today. You have to make yourself as valuable as possible to make it now. No one can ever take it away from you either.
