I live downtown and there are 5 or 6 homeless regulars that sleep outside my building. They smell bad, make lots of noise, and don't dress very nice. Should they be allowed to stay here or should I be able to petition get rid of them? The constant nightly barrage of water ballons are having no effect...the homeless only get cleaner that way...Help!!! I wish they would to go to New Mexico...

I don't know what the legalities are, but it's definitely morally wrong. We employed taxpayers pay for the street, the sidewalk, the parks, etc. Since they are homeless and choose not to contribute to society, I think they should not be allowed to infringe on the rights of the people who are paying for the property.

Contact the local authorities and ask them what you can do. If they are causing problems - being threatening, making rude comments, blocking your passage, there's probably more chance that you can do something.

I lived in a place like that. It was the cheapest I could get and I had been homeless myself. Usually when I'm homeless I can get a couch somewhere or had a car to sleep in. Once I begged and once I spent a night totally outside. There's more to that story. I don't use drugs or anything, but have been sick and had hard times. I finally got into something real cheap, but that's where all the other bums went to. The ones just getting out of prison. The mentally disabled. The anti-social. The alcohalics. And those who have been evicted for similar stuff. You can't tell them apart and they hang with each other, so then you end up with them in the hall. "so and so said I could crash here tonight" "hope we're not bothering you" "we're just having a party...got a beer?" "Uh Uh I'm looking for______" You get the picture. One guy was in an empty room upstairs. Someone was coming, so he, in his drunken stupor, walked out the second story window. I watched and waited with horror, until he finally got up and stumbled into the downstairs hallway and passed out. Then I was kinda glad he was there and not dead and where I could just look out and check on him. What happened to that young boy that he got so alchohalic at such a young age? And who is responsible for him now?
Balloon fight! No. Just kidding.

One thing you can do is call the police, I know this may seem harsh or maybe even cruel but they could be told to no longer trespass, they could even be arrested which I know is mean but at least that might help get rid of your problem, you also might want to let your manager know or even attend a city council meeting and let your voice be heard. One problem is many people tend to want to push away the homeless people who really do not have a place to go and no city really wants homeless people. I was in Germany about 9 years ago and you know what you will not find a single homeless person on the streets because they take care of their own people before they go out and help other countries, now if the United States did this, this country would be a better country for you and me. I mean look what happened to the people in Louisiana, look how long it took for them to get any type of help and many did not even get help. There is not to many homeless shelters out there unfortunately and what ones that are out there are always full. take my advice go to your city council to see what is being done about the homeless situation in your town, maybe your voice needs to be heard, maybe you can make a difference , good luck. I would not throw anymore balloons at them though you could be arrested for assault, remember also it was not there fault that they are homeless. how would you feel if I threw a balloon at you??

They really have problems. Laziness has nothing to do with their condition. They lack homes. And there's a billion reasons why they don't. One is that there simply aren't enough jobs, or competition for jobs are such that ~5% of the population have to be unemployed for the economy to work. This leaves people with mental disabilities, social problems, lack of social nets and families with no where to go. If I had to sleep in 3 jackets in a crooked corner on broken glass during the day-- I'd be getting drunk too. It's a miserable life that isn't smply solved with self-help coaching.

If they're making noise that's not pleasant. You Could let them know that you live upstairs and they need to quiet down, or you'll have to call the cops. They're really oppressed people and generally don't like going to jail. Nor are they, generally, violent and threatning though they may appear that way to some. The cops will, in my city at least, dehumanize them in a way that makes them understand they must move along, but don't imprison. There isn't room in prison to deal with them.

Isn't that a such a shameful thing for our society to have, homeless people. Not shameful because we have them but shameful because it was allowed to happen to them.

We would not have to wonder about questions like this if we could figure out how not to have homeless people, would we? There must be some way to solve this that still respects every individuals' humanity.

I don't have the answer but we have a society of millions that could put their heads together to solve it.

No, they do not have a right to sleep there.

And for all the bleeding hearts telling this person to suck it up, perhaps you should open your own doors and allow these homeless people to move in with you. That way, the questioner doesn't have to deal with them, they have shelter AND you can feel good about having helped someone instead of telling someone what they should be doing to assuage your own guilty conscience.

As long as you own the property, then go ahead and call the police. It's YOUR property, so YOU shouldn't have your SACRED rights to property violated. If it weren't illegal then I'd... ...anyway it is illegal...

Oh, and for all those bleeding hearts who say, "Oh, those poor little wretches. How CRUEL you are, why, you ought to be ashamed of your self, trying to repel gate crashers that de-value your property and who pose a hazard to your security and health". Maybe if they're done putting themselves in the homeless's shoes, maybe, just maybe, they'll realize that you pay to upkeep the buliding, you clean the building, you paid for the building's plumbing, electricity, natural gas, utilities, you paid for the construcation and upkeep of the building day after day after day after DAY, and that YOU have the right to decide who takes advantage of that building.

How would you feel if one day you lost everything you had and were forced to live on the street and someone dropped a water balloon on your head? Wouldn't be so funny then, would it, Punk? You need to realize that you aren't the only person in the world who matters. If you don't like them being there, find a way to help them, not criticize them. Shame on you.

I'm not trying to sound like a horrible person. But,I would probably just keep walking. If he made eye contact there's a 45% chance I would've brought him some food. If he asked me for food I would, without a doubt, give him some food and drink.
