It's hard because when you don't have any close friends because you lived in isolation - a cave really - with your girlfriend for 10 years - it's going to be really really hard.

The key is to prepare for times of vulnerability when you're going to want to revert to old behavioral patterns. ie. wanting to call her to talk with her just before bedtime because maybe this is what you two used to do when you were together, etc.

Find a substitute behavior pattern to get you through your tough times. Either make some friends fast or get involved with something else that'll help you focus your energies on something else...anything but just not "her."

Take some time for yourself and treat yourself to restoring your spirit - you'll need to.

Afterwards, when you find someone else in your life you'll find that even the most painful memories will become just very dim memories all but forgotten on the horizon of time.

Mourn the loss of the friendship. Get back to doing things you like, biking, hiking, talking to family on the phone. If you obsess about the person, go see a movie and break that train of thought. Eventually you'll be ready for someone new.
