First, as a minimum punishment, suspend his computer privileges for a while (whatever amount of time you consider to be appropriate - a week, two, a month).
Second, explain why it is so dangerous. Remind him that not everyone on the computer is who they pretend to be, and he's not only risking his own safety, but the safety of his family.
Third, and this always worked great when I was a kid, give him extra chores - lots and lots of chores. Taking away privileges is bad, but actually having to do some hard work, break a sweat, and get dirty really sucks.

ground him from the computer for a while, install a keylogger so you are able to view all of his conversations from now on.. put parental locks on certain things. Have a long talk with him about what happens to people who give their addresses out on the internet, make him watch to catch a predator and the news... atleast thats what i would do... if he does it again dont allow him on the internet for a long long time, only allow him to use the computer to do his homework... another thing that you could do is if he has a computer in his room take it out of that room and put it somewhere like the living room where you can also monitor him atleast until he can earn your trust back...

Take all use of the computer away for a week! It is best if punishment is in some way related to the crime. You might try to find a way to prevent that happening again, we kept the computer in the living room, where I could watch my kids use it. Some people use a parent controlled password.

Take his computer AWAY FOR A MONTH and his cell phone and anything else that has to do with electronics to get the point across. His decision didn't just affect him but everyone that is living at the address that he gave out!
I would be extremely upset.

The computer is an important learning tool for most children, but there are times when children need to be monitored because you never know who they are speaking to. And for the punishment... that shouldn't be to harsh if you find out there hasn't been any harm, maybe just restricted hours on the comp where you can watch him.

Swiftly and without mercy. This is very serious I would take the computer with me whenever I went to work. This is very serious I would make him watch the 20/20 series 'TO CATCH A PREDATOR" and show him exactly what could happen to him also look up the horror stories about what has happened to children and let that sink in so he will never do it again!

Take away his computer privileges for a specific amount of time. I think two weeks should be the minimum. He has to understand how serious this is! It's his safety as well as the other family members who live in your house.

Revoke his computer privileges. Kids have to learn how dangerous the Internet can be. If you don't hit him where it hurts he may not get the message, and this is too important a message for him not to get.
