You should tell him you heard about his mom dying, and that you are really, really sorry. And if there is anything you can do to help, ask him to please let you know.
It's a terribly difficult loss for someone who is just 14, and there aren't any magic words you can say to make it all better. Nor can you tell him it will be okay, or to 'take it like a man' and get over it. Because it won't ever be okay, and men are allowed to cry, and feel sad, when they lose their moms.
Just be a friend to him, and let him know you are sorry for his loss.
You sound like a very kind hearted person. Good for you!

If you are not really close just go get a simpathy card and give it to him, and leave it at that. He will appreciate the fact that you cared enough to do that much for him.

This is very hard for him, just be kind , loving and try and get him involved with what he used to do and liked doing. He does not need more drama , he needs simple attention , love and understanding.

If they are having a get together at his home for family and friends then you should go and let him know that you are there for him and if he needs anything you will help.

tell him that you are sorry for his loss, that you are thinking of him and that if he ever wants to talk to give you a call...not to much of what anyone says right now is going to register to him...
