It can be done but by using a series of strong passwords, and keeping your computer un-infected you can make it difficult.
First, make sure you go into setup and password protect simply starting you computer. Use a different password to sign into Windows. A third for signing into Yahoo, MSN, AOL etc. websites where you have email accounts. All passwords should be at least 8 random characters long. Use both upper and lower case letters and add in numbers and punct. marks too.
Do not use common words such as "love". These are too easily guessed. Do not use anything that other person would know, such as the name of your dog, your spouse or your kids.
Use both a good anti-virus and anti-spyware and scan on a regular basis. Pay particular attention if they find a "keylogger". A keylogger will record your every key stroke and take a screen -shot of every site that you visit.
There are also hardware keyloggers. Make sure nothing "extra" is ever connected between your computer and your keyboard. For real sensitive data, you can use the built in On Screen Keyboard which is much more difficult to keylog.
Good luck.

Yes, but it takes someone who really knows how to get to the password file and to open it so that it can be understood. Best way to ensure that it doesn't happen is to use as many passwords as possible. Change it often and never write it down. However, your password for your email is not something he would be able to get into i.e. a yahoo email account or such as long as you do not download those file onto your PC.

jibber is right. however he forgot to mention that you can password protect your system a system boot in most newer computers at least.
to do this you need to go in to your computers BIOS and adjust the security to password protect the system boot and the BIOS settings.
However this can be over ridden if the BIOS is hardware cleared or the battery dies or is removed even for a second.
so be warned.
these tools will help keep your system clean, however if your brother is clever then he may be able to hack your system.
