Why do some people insist on being smug b******* by spouting off great long pieces of pop-history which doesn't actually directly answer the question?

A very, very, very, very excellent band from the 1980s.
Oh yeah Style Council as well. That was Weller's Tin Machine - a means of getting rid of all his existing fans who had become rather oppressive. Wasn't my cup of tea. But The Jam were something special.
