Are they the same? How would you get into them? My fiancee wants to join them but I really wouldn't know what to tell him. Is there any info that you all could share with me about it? Thanks!

Ok to clear up all the blah blah from others ansering this please read on. :)

1. They are not the same and are in no way provable to be connected faternally or otherwise.
2. The last grand master was burned at the stake in "1309" not 1307. His name was James De Moley(Spelling might be Molay)
3. The order of The Knight Templar --->no longer exists<--- as it was disband by he Pope. So unless some Freemanson looking to pat himself on the back has a Bull (Church document from a pope) Restoring the order, is lying or unfortumatly misslead. More so if the free mason are indeed Templars, NONE of them are fallowing thier duties as crusadors or folloing the rules for the vows required of True Templars and unlike the True Templars who were burned at the stake denying to their deaths disobedience to God or the vows the took. Lastly The Free Masons have NO ENTITLEMENT to the Templar name that so many died for.
4. Freemasons are as secretive today as the templar were during there time. Therefore I have no evidence to confirm that they are "Evil"
5. The only plasable conection between the two Organizations is the Masons during the crusades (Now known as free masons) MAY HAVE worked for The Knights Templar to build there impressive Castles. As Extremely few documents from the order survived them. So good luck on proving it beyond speculation.

The Order of Knights Templar is an appendant order in Freemasonry, its a level of advancement for those who go through the Ancient York Rite Masonic system and is open only to Christian Freemasons. How do I know this? I am one. Past Master of my local lodge and Active in my local Commandery of Knights I am very familiar with the degrees associated with the lodge.

In order to become a knight you must first be a Freemason by joining a local symbolic lodge (you must ask to join). After certain membership requirments are satisfied namely a committe of inquiry and a vote on the potential candidate, a person will recieve three symbolic degrees of Local or Blue Lodge membership. Starting with the Entered Apprentice, the Fellow Craft and the Final Degree of Master Mason. Depending where you are from it can take Months or years to complete the three degrees.

After these degrees in order to join the Templars you must then become a member of the York Rite System starting with the Royal Arch Chapter to the Commandery of Knights Templar. In order to gain membership in Templars you must be a 3rd degree or Master Mason and be a Royal Arch York Rite Mason, and be a Christian.

I can tell you as I member I enjoy being a Templar, not only for its "prestige" but because of the difference I am able to make in the lives of the less fortunate. Make no mistake membership is an honor, but available to anyone willing to do the work of charity, and it earns much respect within the Masonic Fraternity.

Here are some links I think you might find informative.

Now they are not the same thing. Knights Templar is an order from the crusades who were said to guard the grail among other things. Freemasons are a fraternal organization. My friend just joined, you have to ask a Mason, go through some classes and learn some rites. The costs are pretty low. The reason you have to ask a Mason (contact Masonic Hall if you don't know any) is because they don't recruit.
