Those are both very good sources but to clarify my question how long do they take to mature in captivity, has any one raised one from a hatchling that could tell me how long it took to reach adulthood.

In captivity, tortoises are provided with more heat and food, so they grow much faster than their counterparts in the wild. You must exercise caution and not overfeed your tortoises. This is the most common problem b/c people think reptiles are like mammals and need for everyday - wrong. Feed your red foot tort 3-4 times a week only. Overfeeding will cause deformities, pyramiding (lumpy shells) and a slow death by putting stress on the kidneys and liver.

Now you know the risks, it takes normally 5-6 year before a male is ready to reproduce, and female 6-9 years, depending on size. A whole lot of factors will play into this and these are general figures. I have raised redfoots and other torts from hatchlings to semi-adults. Tortoises actually never stop growing and keep growing until they die. The grow the fastest at the beginning of their lives for survival purposes and slow down as they get older.

If you are interested in breeding, pruchase adult breeder or else you will be waiting for 6-9 years or longer sometimes for your redfoots to breed.
