IT'S WHEN YOU GO OUT INTO THE PASTURE LATE AT NIGHT, AND THE COWS ARE SLEEPING STANDING UP. YOU THEN RUN TOWARDS THE COW AIMING FOR HIS HIPS, THEN THE COW SHOULD FALL OVER. I THINK IT'S CRUEL!

I have been around cows all my life (almost 50 years) and I have never seen a cow sleep standing up. That's horses. It is possible to tip a cow over; sometimes it is necessary to doctor it or help it have a calf, but it's not something you would want to do for no reason. First of all a cow has good ears, a good sense of smell and eyes on the side for a wide field of vision. Second, the cow would be running and you have to catch it and grab her tail then pull sideways. Yes, a cow can get up afterwards and is generally pretty mad so you better get out of the way fast. Additionally, a cow can kick both backwards and sideways so it is not something you would want to do for a lark. As for a cow leaning into the wind, it would have to be blowing like 100 mph or more for a 1200 pound cow to have to lean to stay on her feet. A human wouldn't be able to stand up in that kind wind, let alone tip a cow in it. I suspect cow tipping is like snipe hunting...it has been made up as an amusing trick to pull on city slickers.

Never done it and I suppose it can be dangerous if you don't know what you are doing but basically it's one person positions themselves as a pivot and the other person pushes the cow which falls down over the pivot person. The cow in Essence tips over or rolls over onto the ground. I'm sure not too much of a rush for the cow either.

It's a practical joke that people from the midwest made up. When someone from out of state visits or moves there they take them out to tip cows while they are asleep (assuming the cows stand up while sleeping). Then they tell the newbie to tip a cow but everyone runs off and leaves the newbie there by themselves til morning. Mean huh? And for the record, cows sleep lying down.

It's the amount of money you leave them after they've been milked. The more the milk, the bigger the tip.
Yeah, I know, I'm getting wacky. Sorry, but it's Friday, it's hot and I'm just too out of it to even begin explaining about running around cow pastures at night and knocking over cows......

WHEN YOU TIP A COW
Cow tipping is a pastime allegedly common in rural areas, in which participants sneak up on an upright sleeping cow and then push it over for amusement. Some variants of this urban legend state that the cow is then unable to get up.
One popular variant relies on a supposition that cows lean into a steady wind while asleep in order to keep balance. Based on this, the cow tipper lightly pushes against one side of the cow's torso, and gradually increases the force of push. The cow, while asleep, leans into the push and remains upright. Then when the cow tipper has all of their body weight on the cow, they jump to the side. The cow, still leaning into the ‘wind’, tips over in that direction.

It's when you sneak up on a cow when it's sleeping and you knock it on it's side, because cows sleep standing up. Weird eh
