this is a copy and past from two of the answers
this is from SWARN: Lebanon crossed the border and kidnapped soldiers on Israel's soil, so they struck first. They have also fired over 70 rockets into Israeli territory, which some claim are supplied by the Iranian Military.
Israel looks like the bad guy, but they are reacting, not acting. They're defending themselves and trying to save the lives of the kidnapped hostages. There's no such thing as excessive retaliation, THEY DIDN'T START IT!
AND THIS IS FROM LINTON:
Hezbollah militia in Lebanon 'started it' by kidnapping 2 Israeli soldiers and killing three others. However Israel were the first to start chucking bombs/missiles/rockets at infrastructure. The official Lebanese millitary didn't start anything - all they've done so far is direct some anti-aircraft fire against the Israeli planes that were trying to bomb them, which is probably a fair response.

Hamas decided to kidnap an Israeli soldier and hold him for ransom, or for a prisoner swap. Israel didn't like that, so they started bombing Gaza and sending troops in. Hezbollah, backed by Iran, had to show Hamas they were better, so they decided to kidnap TWO Israeli soldiers and hold them for a prisoner swap, and they killed 8 others on their way out. Israel REALLY didn't like that, so they started bombing Lebanon, where Hezbollah operates. Israel has tried to convince the Lebanese government to help them get rid of Hezbollah, since the Lebanese say they don't like the terrorist group, but the Lebanese haven't really offered to do anything about it either, and they've resisted previous international efforts to stop Hezbollah from sending rockets into Israel.
At the moment, Israel is pretty much bombing Gaza and southern Lebanon at will, while Hezbollah is firing rockets constantly at cities in northern Israel.
Iran instigated the whole thing, possibly as a distraction from their own nuclear problems. Everyone, even Arab nations like Egypt and Saudi Arabia, agree this was started by the terrorists, but a lot of people, especially the European Union, are saying Israel is taking it too far.
Oh, and the leader of Hezbollah has described it as "open war." So it doesn't look like it's gonna end any time soon.
