I think most of those people are confused. They aren't mixed with Cherokee. They are 1/2 american and 1/2 liar.

In reality there is no such thing as white. We all have mixed blood. So many are mixed with Cherokee because at one time the Cherokee tribe was the largest & still is as far as I know. the Cherokees & other Native Americans were here for at least a thousand years before the Europeans showed up.

The Cherokee took up the ways of the White man to survive; you also must remember that there is about 400 years of intermarriage in the eastern part of the country and only about 100-150 years in the west. Add to that that the eastern peoples were trying to be friendly and helpful in the beginning, and the Western tribes saw what was going on and so stayed away.

Still didn't keep my French-Canadian great-grandfather from marrying a Crow woman!

This is a bit of a joke in the anti-racist circles I facilitate. In a room of 50 people of various ethnicities and races, the majority of the caucasian people in the room will cite "Cherokee" in addition to whatever anglo-saxon/teutonic/celtic, etc. blood they may have. This is a way for them to ease their "white guilt" in a room full of other people of various races. The fact is that it is impossible for THAT MANY Americans to have Cherokee blood. I believe it is a misnomer, and actually, they may have other Native American ancestry, but nobody ever cites Hopi or Cree or Tonkawa or Commanche, etc. Why? Somewhere in the past, for whatever unknown reason, "Cherokee" became a generic term for Native blood in white people, and it's stuck. This is unfortunate, and would be difficult to correct at this juncture.

I'm a professional genealogist and most people claim they're part Cherokee either because it sounds cool, or they were told by dead ancestors that they descend from Cherokee blood.

99% of the time, it's false.

Im not... Im part Onnendaga. 1/4 to be exact. My fathers mother was a migratory canadian/american indian of the blackfoot regions between upstate NY and Canada. I think alot of people SAY they are mixed with cherokee because it is the easiest tribe to remember when they are lying... Unless they are full and can prove it... Don't believe them.

Not sure why you are asking this question in particular. You might as well ask why there are so many mixtures period. Or do you specifically hate Cherokees or something? And about being pure white....how sure are you about that???
