Let's face the truth. Nobody is here to be convinced. That much is clear. They're here to fight. Some people put up stuff only to get reactions. Most others use highly charged wording or ask stupid questions like "If Bush was a s.t.d. which one would he be?" Then there are the parrots, who repeat what they read on extremist websites.
The insults are to cut down others views. But I have no problem with those. Politics is a bit of a free-for-all, no-holds-barred sport.
As the man said, "Politics ain't tiddlywinks!"

It is not required. Only those who have no facts to back up their agenda need to resort to insults.
Monkeys , when fighting, sling crap at each other. Some have evolved beyond that, some have not.

No, but it's more fun that way. Seriously, though, it's a good filter. People who know what they're talking about and can form a rational, coherent argument don't have to resort to insults, so if you see or hear one, you can bet that that person doesn't know sh*t about what they're spouting off on.

The liberal democrats have been doing this for 20 years. Since they can't use logic or come up with intellectual debate, they resort to name calling and demonizing

Yes. It is what passes for political debate in this nation any more. If you try to point out where you disagree with someone's opinion for logical reasons it is "hate-mongering" and "personal attacks."

Amen. I've been insulted many times, many more times than I have insulted. You're preaching to the choir.

No, but sometimes when the Republicans spew forth their hatred and lies it's darn near impossible to keep from insulting them.

Isn't that what politics is all about, insulting people by insinuating they are stupid

No, I believe people do that when they have nothing to say. I just try to steer the question back on track when that happens.
