You should watch the movie Purple Rain, if you haven't already, it's a great cheesy flick. The song was written about Prince's relationship with his father .

I think the rain represented tears and Prince's favorite color is purple! It was probably titled for the "shock factor". People would be like..."what's that...purple rain"...and then they would listen to it!
