I have three hamsters... I love them. Gerbils have those long tails that remind me of mice.

Will if you want a hamster get a hamster. All I know is that gerbils like other gerbils and they need lots of company so you have to get another gerbil to make the one you get from your friend happy. What can I say, hamster like to be a lone except when they are mating or when they have little ones. Go with what animal you know best and good luck.

You don't always have to listen to your friend. Get the hamster, before someone else does! You wanted him, so get him. Here are some tips:
1. Clean the cage every 3-4 days. Hamsters can get very sick on their own urine.
2. Make sure to give him lots of attention, not just 2 weeks then forget about him. My sis did that, and the thing died of being so lonely.
3. Make sure to give him only so much food. If you give him to much, it could get stale easier and you will waste more money when you do that, to buy more. And make sure to change the water every 10 hours. If it gets too warm, the hamster won't drink it and he could get really thirsty!
4. Have fun with him!

Hate to be a downer, but it is a mammal and it
might not be in it's best interest to be imprisoned.
Personally I wouldn't support the industry by buying
any small mammal. However, if you give it A LOT
of space and get it a companion, then get a hamster
(gerbils have a lot of energy and can really go insane
even with a decent amout of space).
Don't torture the animals! They are animals not toys.

If you want a hamster, then get a hamster. I like hamsters too because they're so cute. It's also good that you've had personal experience with them.

Sure, if the one you want is actually nice. Gerbils are cool too. I've had both, but you have to get what YOU want.
Since you've had experience, I guess you know to only get ONE. Hamsters in captivity often kill each other or fight when they reach sexual maturity.

Yes, get a hamster, but do not get a female and a male hamster because your home will be full of little hamsters.

dwarf hamsters are really great because they are less agressive, take up less room, get along with other hamsters, and don't make a lot of noise when exercising. i have 2 at the moment and they're really friendly, don't mind to be held, and enjoy crawling on ur arms, shoulders, etc. they're not hard to care for either. (ex. they keep their cages fairly clean)

I myself have had both and if I had to choose it would definetly be a hampster. Gerbils are more high strung and don't really like to be handeled where if you get a hampster (opt for a baby) you can have them to where you can play with them all the time. But thats just my experience good luck with your decision.
