I work in an office and when I go to the men's room I hear guys fart while standing next to me is this normal?

I mean I fart too...but how should I react when I hear another co-worker fart in front of me.

Since I was a kid all my friends would do this in front of me...but that was ok because I knew them for years but my co-workers???I don't know what to say...they are also good friends but...ah am I overreacting?

You should say nothing when someone farts.
It's an odd quirk of etiquette. You are assumed not to be in control of farts. It's different than burps, which you are assumed to be in control of. After burps you say "Excuse me" or similar.
Saying anything just draws attention to a fart, which is rude, even for the person who did it. Everyone is supposed to pretend it never happened.

I think it tends to happen since the muscles in that area are being used when someone employs the urinal.

Yes, you are overreacting. In the workplace is the only place we have to be our true disgusting selves. We cannot fart in our cubicles (loud ones or stinky ones) b/c we would get caught by the woman unless there are some disgusting yet bold men out there. The bathroom is like a guy secturary. Plus, when someone is dropping a deuce you know your are going to hear it. Its accepted. No need to aplogize for the farting. It's our "special time" and we all know it. Once you leave the bathroom you take on a different persona.

Women fart too. Are you human? ALL animals produce gas from processing food etc in their bodies. It's natural. NO COMMENTARY required.
