Its the water you are putting in it. You're probably using straight tap water, and so it is leaving all kinds of mineral, etc. deposits all over the inner components of your iron. Use only distilled water in your iron. Always.

This may be a bit off-topic, but I bought a Sunbeam (USA) steam iron in the 1980s (around 1983?), and I'm still using it. I don't use the steam function (to prolong the life of the iron); instead I spray water from a spritz bottle. I think it's a good idea to use distilled water if you live in a hard-water area (as I do).

I wish I knew!!! The other week, mine burned right through a pair of jeans then melted it's self!! The fumes were terrible, and that iron was a replacement for one which blew up!! They seem to be designed to self-destruct a couple of weeks after your guarantee has expired

sounds like you have very hard (has a lot of mineral content) tap water. If your Irons are rusting that fast, imagine what your hot water heater must look like. I would invest in a water softener. HTH

I have one that I purchased in 1990. And it is still going Great. IF I have distilled water I use that but usually use tap water. Just make sure it is empty when you are done using it

I can't offer a sensible answer, but I am intrigued to know why you felt the need to make plain that you weren't ironing your hair!
