Can you explain where the name came from? Do schoolkids still play it now? Has any more barbarous pursuit ever been invented?

For the record, it had nothing to do with betting shops, at least as far as I could tell. It was more about mindless violence.

No, but I remember reading about them getting busted in the papers all the time.

The name came from ' bookie ' or ' making book ' that is, taking, cataloguing, and paying out on illegal bets.

Illegal as in no licenses, fees or taxes paid to the government.

What kind of school kids inhabit your particular schools, although, today, I wouldn't be surprised.

Probably not. It used to finance drug shipments.
