If we want to continue to call ourselves "civilized" and survive another couple millenia (sp?), then yes we have a responsibility to become educated.
Otherwise, we will probably kill ourselves off with ignorance and violent, bloody, blind hatred.

Anytime you study something you are creating neural connections in the brain. The more neural connections there are in your brain the better for learning new things and making new connections so I bristle at your use of studying the Bible and ignoring the past as a waste for the brain and our time. Bible is full of great wisdom and knowledge. Jesus, Paul, Plato, Pascal, Aristotle, Homer, Shakespeare are all worthy and valuable to study.
I think that we have a huge responsibility. As it states in the Spiderman movies, 'with power comes responsibility' and With great power (I believe) there is a great responsibility. With the knowledge that we have achieved so far there is a lot of power that has been attributed to that, especially with advancements that have a double edge quality to them like nuclear power and genetics.
We need to know how to use those things wisely. That wisdom is old not new. So studying the old world wisdom is a great asset to this worlds new knowledge related accomplishments. To turn our back on our pasts history, wisdom, and what they learned is a very foolish thing indeed.

You are making a mistake, people from yesteryear did no have the capacity to asimilate so much. What is today written on one the on The New York Times could have been the whole knowledge of a person during a life time.
I f you want your brain to increase capacity, just learn meditation everything comes to you flowing into.

Boy! If anyone needs proof that there needs to be more people taking advantage of education, just check out the questions on this site! Most can't spell, most don't use proper grammar and most have no clue what it means to have respect and show courtesy towards others. I usually hold my tongue but I'll tell you, your question just brought out the frustration in me. Thank you!

no I don't see too much waist. What I see is abundance and the lack of need to used our full wits. I see people having fun instead of working sun up to sun down like our great grand parents did.

Yes, we are wasting our knowledge as humans. We are not being open or being at all. We are so absorbed in our lives that we cannot see anything else.
