If you have a hamster they can work. They usually get chewed up fast and you need to replace parts often. If you have gerbils it will get destroyed so fast they will probably escape before you find the hole! For any other pet, it would be too small, unless you have a bunch hooked up. I find that they are too hard to clean, and the animals are too hard to capture because they hide in the tubes. They are great for keeping kids from getting sick of their pets, because you can always change around the cage and add to them.

I like aquariums - I wouldn't get a critter trail because they break a lot

as long as the hamster isnt too fat to crawl in the tubes, and as long as you dont lock the thing in a room with a mean hungry cat... because the cat will get it...
