I think it is more posturing learned from growing up in a dangerous neighborhood. I mean, I learned to talk to myself and act a little insane when I was alone in somewhat scary situations (like walking home alone at night through the city) because I felt like people just didn't want to mess with the truly insane and they kept their distance.
Peace!

...? I haven't taken a psych course, but I bet its being raised in a poor environment where the only successful people still living in the area are selling drugs and shooting guns at the neighborhood competition. The image is usually well established before they become rappers.
Very few rappers come from the suburbs, there are exceptions, but as a whole most rappers come from government housing, low income, high crime rate areas... so do they create an inferior ego counter response.... maybe, or maybe it is just a reaction to the survival they have been dealing with their whole life.
I know it is exaggerated on most songs, but that doesn't mean some of the subjects don't exist. If you want to target rappers as insincere or counter responsing inferior egos, look at almost any music today. Rockers whine about drugs/bad parents/ and staying up late, Country talks about country boys surviving and loyalty to the South, Pop and R&B explain how good of lovers they are, etc.etc. etc.

You know for some, yeah it maybe, but a lot of them have and do really live the life they are showing and rapping about, but the real question is if that life is something to be proud of or glamorize it. I've seen it first hand and its not all that great.
and the only reason you people think it is silly or wrong is because you are ignorant to the black communities way. It does not mean that we are uneducated by any means. As a black person in the United States, we are always given the short end of the stick, and sadly this will NEVER change. So because some don't have the means or the opportunity to change their situation does not mean that they are silly or stupid for making their money by putting on a tough or hard front. It means that they are smart enough to realize that the way they can make big money is by singing or rapping about a situation that many people like them go through.

Inferior ego?
No.
Quite the opposite. These rappers must have a huge ego, and they must think very highly of themselves for them to put themselves "out there" for the world to see.
Keep in mind, that rappers are in show-business, and most people in show business tend to have a lot of self confidence and over-inflated egos......and even some, perhaps, illusions of grandeur.
Some rappers really are a product of their environment....many did grow up in so-called "tough" neighborhoods.
Having a 'tough image" goes hand-in-hand with Hip-Hop, Rock, and Metal music. It's a lot of macho posturing, angst, and aggression. The media and record lables make sure to perpetuate that image.

Nope. It's just that the bad & tough 'gangsta' image is what sells the most rap recordz. Why the uneducated masses buy that junk? well, they're uneducated.
The music industry has been playing the same tune ever since woodstock. Create a counter-culture image, then sell to it.

Ya probably. Or maybe some of them are completely faking it because that is what sells which would mean the consumers are the ones with an inferior ego complex.

Hey that street thug life style is only an invitation to take a bullet later.
It sucks to live as hatred or in fear.
Living in fear is being a slave and that is what the rapper talks about placing people in harms way, which is by default fear.

No, it's a money response. It pays good. I've been thinking about getting some Bling-Bling and bustin' some rhymes myself.
