It shouldn't. If you are in America, it is not even the governments job to tell you what you can and cannot do in your car that is not a threat to others. For example, you can't drink and drive becasue that tends to end in other people dying. However, when was the last time someone was killed due to smoking and driving? Exactly. The government of America has overstepped its bounds SO FAR that we think it is within their purview to even CONSIDER banning smoking in cars. Hello people, that is NOT what government was created for.

I don't see any good answers to why it should be on here yet.

As for secondhand smoke Look at the exhaust pipe. Running a car should be against the law then.

As for lighting a smoke distracts you and might cause an accident
Sneezing, Coughing, and Scratching an itch can to So these should be against the law also. No blinking Either.

The problem is that there has been people elected to write laws for over 200 years and their running out of ideas.

Its the same principal as eating or cellphones. Its a distraction. Also, have you seen some people that try to light and drive. And how many people have tried to get out of ticket by saying you dropped a cigerrette. Well, if your that unsafe in a vehicle while smoking, then no smoking while you drive.

And for the two that said its my vehicle and I will do what I want....DRIVING IS A PRIVILEGE NOT A RIGHT. So your right, if you want to smoke in it cause you own it..ok. But if the state want to tell you that you cannot drive it...well thats their right.

They cannot ban smoking in your own vehicle, maybe if you are leasing the vehicle they might add a stipulation to your contract that you cannot smoke in it, but as far as a government ban on smoking in private vehicles, they can't.

If there is one reason, I feel it's because of everyone tossing their cig butts out the window when they're done. It doesn't seem like much, but if anyone of them took all the cig butts they smoked in a year and placed them in a bag, they'd realize how much garbage they're throwing out the window.

That and second hand smoke is just irritating.

So the police have yet another great way to pull you over and search your car without having to deal with the "constitution".

The seat belt law must not be doing a good enough job for them.

I heard from a friend that lives in pennsylvania that if you have children present in your car or your home it is illegal to smoke in either of them. If its a social services law or criminal I am not sure but it does exist.

It smells up your car, so the next poor person who buys it will get stuck with the horrible smell that is impossible to get out. AND.... lighting a cigarette can distract a driver for an instant and cause a wreck. I think those are enough reasons.

Ridiculous.. what's the police supposed to do.. see you smoking while you whizz by them on the freeway and have them chase you down to give you a ticket?
Meanwhile there are real criminals out there doing their thing.
