There is a real answer to this question. The first to tell me what it is gets 10 points.

In case you haven't heard it before, this question is usually asked in jest--saying that why don't they give passengers in the plane the same protection as the recording box. I get sick of it cause it only shows the asker's ignorance.
So anyone care to take a shot?

it would be to heavy to fly

First, the black box isn't indestructible. There are frequent examples in which you can't get anything out of the black box recording because it's too damaged.

Second, it's easier to make the planes safer by preventing them from crashing. They're already doing this in the U.S. through better monitoring of the flight patterns.

Third, flying is already the safest way to travel by a long shot. Our money would be better spent on making cars safer.

Finally, even if the plane were somehow indestructible, if it crashed into the ground at 600 mph, everyone inside would still die from the rapid deceleration. You'd have to fill the whole plane with super-duper packing peanuts for anyone to have a chance to survive. Note that the space shuttle cockpit is darn near indestructible, but the astronauts in both shuttle disasters still died from the physical forces of the crashes.

I know not of what material the black box is made. Possibly high impact steel.

I cannot fathom an aircraft being made of the same. Weight would be one factor. Like trying to fly a battleship.

I have always observed that its easier to break a big object than to break a small object. Even if they are both made of the same material. So I think it is easier to make a small object like the black box "indestructible".

The black box isn't indestructible, it's just very durable. And it's durable, not so much because of what it's made out of, but because of the way that it is constructed.

If we constructed airplanes to be as durable as their black boxes, they wouldn't fly.

It should be a simple matter of weight. Most aircraft are made from light but weak material.

Um, because the airplane would be so heavy it would never get off the ground? Or, it would cost too much fuel.

Because it would fly like a rock?

this just a guess but I would think it has something to do with weight.
