I love reading Korean and Japanese Manga, but I believe the pricing is too high in Canada. In the US they only pay 10.00 $ but In Canada we pay 13.99 for the same manga book. Our dollar is 90 cents American so why can't we lower prices!!I bet Tokyopop just sets the retail price high for Canada!

for one it seems that everything in canada is more expensive-I don't know why. Also because mangas are imports. A japanese friend of my brother told us that mangas in japan are only like 5 US dollars....I wish they were that cheap here. I guess they have to sell it so expensive because companies like VIZ and tokyopop have to reprint them and translate them...so in the long run not only does the author have to make money but the publishing companies in japan and US also have to make profit.

Blame it on the fact that licensing a Japanese anime or manga is very pricey. The original producers normally charge licensors with a hefty price tag regardless of a series's popularity. This is because of a misunderstood concept that any anime/manga material will sell well outside Japan much like the time Anime and Manga started getting attention in the US and Europe in the 90's. That time, series like Dragonball Z, Ranma 1/2, and Sailor Moon were so popular that any company planning to release anime and manga in the US and Europe are willing to buy whatever anime Japan has produced. Nowadays, that's no longer the case and everyone's becoming very picky on what they want to see or read, plus the fact that Manga and Anime in general are now commonplace and not as much of a boom as it was before.

Today, very few distributers would purchase a license from whatever series Japan has. Most would rather get ones that have a sure audience appeal such as Naruto and Full Metal Alchemist. Lesser known but notable series like Emma and Haruhi Sakumaya Leaf may not get the license and attention they need outside Japan.

Mangas are foreign. That means that there's an added cost to ship and translate them. Canadians are the last to get anything (I love living here, but damn our stuff sucks), and when we get stuff it's usually from America (which likes to take advantage of its northern neighbours).

If you look on the net (try the anime corner store: http://www.animecornerstore.com/ or eBay) you can get GNs for $5-10 US (eBay auctions on GNs usually start at around $1, but end at about $10), and given the high Canadian dollar you could get them pretty cheaply.

Although I do think the price is a bit high, I'm just content that manga novels don't cost as much as conventional novels (Fruits Basket rocks, but I could never read it at $20+ a volume).

because the author/ illustrator has to earn a living. They have to work so hard to come up with characters, plot, setting and all and you are trying to lower the prices? Do you know how hard they have to work? You should be grateful that it's not higher! I love manga so much! If you dont' wanna buy it then go to a library or borrow from a friend.

cause stuff in Canada cost more than in the U.S. -_-
and i'm looking at a shonen jump magazine right now (for manga) and it says "Printed & Packaged in Canada" but the prices were still "$4.99US $7.99CAN"
but mangas are pricey everywhere!

hey, manga books are expensive evrywhere, they're expensive in the U.S, everywhere, mainly because of the printings, ink and art becuz if it was just a Calvin & Hobbes, it'd probably just be $5.00 for a big book. So yeah, they charge you for the art, ink, and printings.

High demand. Or maybe it's due to the high cost of retrofitting binding machines for the left side- what's up with that?

They so much cooler than regular books because you don't have to stare at 800 words on page and all you see are pictures and some words. That's why it's so much more expensive! ^__^
