Walkers aren't safe for babies anymore. They cause too many injuries. Try an exersaucer, there's one now with a "stationary walker" attached, where baby can creep around the saucer without really walking anywhere. Mine was 4 months when I first put him in one. As long as your baby can sit up well, he'll do fine in something like this.

I didn't use an actual walker, I used what I call a saucer. The baby stands in it the same and they can play in it, it just doesn't move around the house when they walk. As soon as you baby can be put in it without falling over, it's fine to start using this type of thing. They obviously have to be able to hold up their head well, and have some body control. I think my son was about 5 months old.

my son was actually 2 months old when he started in a walker....but every child is different to a degree. The best method to determine when they are ready for a walker, which will strengthen their legs and facilitate their motor activities, is 1) if they are able to hold their head up steadily and 2) if they are "standing" on their legs when you hold them in your lap. Both of these should be true before you put a baby in a walker or you run the risk of hurting their neck or legs/hips (according to my pediatrician).

Another VERY good option available to young ones today is the stationary "Exersaucer" walker-type toys. This allows the baby mobility in a circular motion, and has toys to promote hand/eye coordination and sound recognition, but does not allow the child to move from room to room, decreasing the risk of injury by pulling something from a table, etc. onto them.

The best to you and your little one! And happy walking!!

when i first put him in it he wont ask for it or anything i put him in his walker for the first time when he was 3-4 months he is now 15 months and walks great. he has been walking since he was 5-6 month but not very well and needed help at times

dont listen to that other person as long as u get a safe walker and dont let them around staires. most babies killed in walkers were becuase there parents where irrisponsible. and thay are not illegal in any was or in any state. that person ur there is stupid

and them saucers are not worth a damned cause the baby dont really learn to walk that just learn to stand and step in circles.

The collective ignorance in the answers stuns me. NEVER, NEVER, NEVER put a child in a walker. A child is not ready for that amount of mobility, otherwise he'd be walking. Get an Exersaucer; they're fun because they have toys all around the rim (which can be changed out) , the kid can sit up and put his feet on the floor ... and they're stationary. In stupid-speak (which I assume walker-buying parents need), "stationary" means the object does not move. Thus, the child does not move. Thus, the child is not in danger.

PLEASE don't buy a walker or take one as a gift. Your child is too precious to risk his/her safety.

Put your baby in a walker when he/she can sit with his/her feet flat on the floor. If put in the walker too early the baby can walk on its toes. The baby thinks this is normal and could continue to do this without the walker. I know 12 year old twin girls who still walk on their toes because of this. My son was put in his walker at around 6 to 7 months. He started walking at around 11 months.

My twin daughters never used a walker because of the safety concerns - however, I had a Johnny Jump-Up, and would put one baby in that and the other in a stationary walker (where they can bounce and turn), and they would play with each other happily. I started them around 6 months.

right as soon as they can hold their head on their own. it gives them something else to do with their legs besides just curling them in the air. i let my son get in a walker at 5 months old and he started walking at 10.5 months old. in my opinion, it strengthens their hips and legs and helps build their muscles.
