Both.

The Pope is Catholic by religion and European (German) by birth.

He is also the leader of Vatican City, a Catholic European nation.

With love in Christ.

Both.

The Pope is Catholic by Faith and European because the Pope is the political head of the Vatican, which is a state in Europe and a member of the United Nations.

Obviously he's both! He's the Pope of the Catholic Church and he was born in Germany, which is in Europe! However, just because he lives in the Vatican City, which is in Italy, which is in Europe, doesn't make him European. I can live in Ireland or Denmark or Lithuania for that matter, but that makes me neither Irish, Danish, Lithuanian, nor European!

I think Moon maiden is right concerning the current pope. Italy is not rally a part of Europe, but the current pope is from /Germany, so there is your answer.

While he is German and Catholic, the Vatican is considered its own country called the Papal States. So in essence, he is now a Papalian. Or Papalese, not sure exactly what he'd be called but you get my point.

Well you don't have to be one or the other so he's both even though the Vatican is it's own entity.
