I mean, I know Canseco went 40/40, but Greenwell had a pretty awesome season too and was a much better fielder.

Greenwell had a good season, beating Canseco in OBP. However, Canseco had a far higher slugging percentage because he was a better power hitter (in an unfriendly park, too), and he scored 34 more runs than Greenwell, which is a significant difference.

You have to remember, too, that Canseco was a good fielder at that point of his career. He was fast, and had a great arm. In fact, he only had one error more than Greenwell that year, and beat him easily in assists, 11-6.

I liked Greenwell when he was with the Sox, but he didn't deserve the MVP award.

Greenwell might not have been the MVP of his own team that year - Dwight Evans also had a phenomenal year, with over 100 RBI.

Canseco definitely was the MVP that year.

because MVP's are very rarely ever given to rookies. one of the same reasons Lebron James didn't get it this year or last.
