I run our desktop services dept and have worked with IBM Thinpads for 5 years now. When you have an LCD issue like the one your discribing 95% of the time it needs the whole LCD replaced and it costs anywhere from $500-$900 depending on many factors. You could pray that your in teh 5% range and the connection cable wiggled loose like the others have stated. Based on how old the T30 laptop is I would not even consider repairing the screen at the cost it will take. But you may want to find a local IT Repair shop and see how much it would take to analyze the issue....you may be able to get this done for $40-$80. But researching new laptops is recommended.

if you're /really/ lucky all that's wrong here is the connector for the video cable that runs up through the hinge is lose. if this is the case fixing it's kind of a pain as you have to detach the keyboard and crawl into the internals of the laptop to reconnect the ribbon (not for the faint of heart). If you aren't lucky, then the ribbon itself or the connection between it an the LCD at the LCD itself is damaged, in which case you're looking down the barrel of a repair that's going to cost more than your T30 is worth. As a workaround you can always connect a normal computer monitor to the laptop and route your video output to it, although this obviously hampers how mobile it is going forward.

well its almost impossible to fix lcd screens yourself. And they are the most expensive part of the computer. I would have it looked at professionally. And hopefully you wont have to get a whole nother computer. But sometimes it costs more to fix it then to buy another laptop...sorry

I am pretty sure the inverter cable is lose or the backlight is broken. Both are easy to fix and don't cost much at all.

Sounds fixable.
If you can't find anyone to do it for less, I charge $100 flat rate for this type of repair (Canadian) plus shipping.
If I can't repair it (rare) all you pay is the shipping.
You will need to email me for details of course.
And please check out shops in your area first, especially the ones that will give you a free evaluation.
