I've come across two ways of remembering dance moves.

Some people write them down in their own shorthand so that they can refer back at need and some people video the move on a digital camera or a camera phone.

Each person is different so you may like to try both and see how you get on. I usually write them down because the camera on my phone's not the greatest but its up to you!

I find the best way to remember dance moves is to break a song that you would be dancing to in to different sections and learn the first parts over a certain amount of time. It does sound very repetative and long but it does work. I also find it easier to do that with any music that you forget. Always remember to dance to the beat not the words of the song.

Write them down. I do ballroom & latin dance, and my wife and I do about 20 different dances. With a dozen or more different steps for each dance, I have to keep track of hundreds of individual steps.

I keep one thick file with a full description of each step, categorized under each dance. It's not quite as bad as it sounds: There is a lot of repetition among the positions and steps, so I develop a shorthand for a lot of the descriptions. Sometimes I throw in some drawings if necessary.

Then I also maintain a shorter paper with all the names of the steps (categorized by dance) and just a few important hightlights of some of the tougher steps (like how the step begins, or a reminder on how to lead the step).

Then I also have a 3x5 file card with just the first letter of each step (categorized by dance). I keep that with me while I'm actually dancing in case I forget how a certain routine goes, and so that I can hit all the steps.

I use the 3x5 card on the dance floor (between dances), and I also bring the shorter paper along in my jacket in case I'm having trouble with a step and want to check the highlights to make sure I'm doing it right. I keep the thick file at home for long-term reference.

It's a lot of work. But if you really want to maintain a lot of dance moves and keep them current, you have to do a lot of work one way or another. The only other real alternative is to practice the steps endlessly and constantly forever, and that's a lot of work too, if you have a lot of steps.

In ballroom & latin dancing, the guy has to lead the steps, which means he has to have them down flawlessly. So he has to be practicing the tougher steps a lot. But he also has to have some way of organizing all the rest of the steps as well, so that he can remember them and arrange them into routines.

(By the way, there are manuals of ballroom & latin dance steps available on the market, but I like to organize my notes and steps my own way.)

(I also know a couple of dancers who videotape all their new steps so that if they forget the steps they can study them on tape the way they learned them.)

Only practice makes perfect...do it often enough and your muscles remember...it becomes automatic. But you cannot go to a lesson and expect to remember anything if you do not practice.
