There are currently 50 states that make up the USA. Plus the "District of Columbia", which includes the capital city of Washington. It is not a state, but a special federal district.
During WW II there were only 48 states, but after the war Alaska and Hawaii, until then only territories, gained the status of states.
For some time now there is a debate going on if Puerto Rico, which also has territory status, should be given the status of a state. But as it looks at present, it is rather unlikely.

There are 50 states in the 'United States', and contrary to what some people seem to think, there are 50 stars on the US flag too - don't bother counting them.
'America' is not a good phrase to use, as you can see it leads to confusion, but I think by 'America' you meant the United States of America.

There are 50 states in the USA but Mexico also has states, I'm not sure how many countries in Americal have states.
America incluced North and South America.
