check or have your reverse light swithcing unit on the transmition checked or if youve driven over tall weeds or something that rubbed under the car may have just unplugged your sending unit

It is the traction control system. Assuming that you cannot just hit the button and turn it off (the left side of the floor shifter) It normally is tripped because of a bad hub bearing or ABS wheel speed sensor. I have seen the ets light come on due to turning sharp on a slippery surface (ie mud or gravel) when an actual problem doesn't exist. Have Auto Zone or Advance pull your computer codes for you and then clear the ETS light. IF it comes back on, you have a sensor bad, if not, it may have tripped due to wheel spin and it's nothing to worry about. PS, the guy above me doesn't have a CLUE. Although a Sunfire might not be the best American car made, there are plenty of American cars that are MUCH better than ANY underpowered, uncomfortable, jap crap that has timing belts to be replaced, bad cv joints, weak automatic transmissions, and HIGH repair bills. If you HAVE to go Japanese, buy Nissan!

LMAO. The only thing I have to contribute to this question is to tell you that if your 99 Sunfire is only just failing you, consider yourself lucky!!! The problem is that these particular cars are very tempermental and do what they feel like. I know cars don't have "minds" or "souls" but I swear, every now and then, there is a "Christine"moment with our cars.....

If it has a trrailer hitch hook up, I would look there. If not, try running a new ground wire to one of the bulbs and see if that works.

The socket is probably bad, dirty or corroded. Clean it as best you can. WD_40 works well with a small wire brush.
