I recently saw an advertisement on MSN for "bagborrowosteal.com," a company which will allow you to join a designer purse club and pay a membership and rental fee for used designer purses. I thought this concept was incredible. Talk about feeding our materialism!

i've always wanted to try out that website

but, i really dont need to fuel my addiction.

anyway, i write down a list of things i want and then if i still want them a month later, then i'll buy them

or, if i see something i like at a store, i'll have it put on hold (or hide it under a clothes rack... you know, whatever.) and then walk around some more. if i see something else i like i choose one of the things to buy

My criteria for a purchase it how much do I need it? Designer products don't even have a place on my list. Advertising companies are very, very savvy in finding out what makes you want to buy a product. There is so much study done on it that it truly is mind boggling. Advertisers use three basic truths to sell. One is that sex sells. The message is that if you buy product x you will be able to get the male\female of your choice. Another is that everyone else has product x, and if you don't there must be something wrong with you. The last one is that if you buy product x, you belong in an exclusive group of people that have product x and that somehow makes you superior. Personally I don't see what is so smart about paying a fortune for an item that has someones name on it when I can get the same thing for much less. Why should I make someone I don't even know rich? But back to the handbag site... keep an eye on it. I'm sure there will be people that use it. Ah well...

Personally, I want to see you try 'n justify buying a designer purse, regardless of how many hundreds of $$ it is, or whether it's new or used. If you can't eat it, wear it, or live in it, then it's not important. Just my 2 cents. Of course, I'm a guy. Women and purses, go figure.

when i'm shopping, if i'm looking for a specific item for a certain scenario or event, i know its justifiable. if i'm just leisure shopping and i find something i like but might not necessarily need, i try to think if there's any specific occasion i can wear it for (and a definite event, not an if... for example, no saying "if i get asked to go to a formal party, i could wear this...") if i can't think of anything, i don't buy it then. after shopping, i try to look at my wardrobe to see what else i could wear it with, and if it's acceptable for common or every day wear. if i see possibilities AND i can't stop thinking about the item (sounds pathetic, i know, but i'm a very fashion-oriented person - i think about clothes a lot :D) then i go back and buy it IF it's a reasonable price. if it's not reasonable, i only buy it if it's an emergency necessity with a time limit - if i have time, i can always find something similar for a better price.

That is ridiculous! I never buy cloaths or purses at full price...I wait for clearance...poeple should put their own life if not the whole world in perspective before spending!

I saw that ad too. I don't want to use borrowed bags. If I want a bag and can't afford it... Work and save till you can. All this throw away culture is fueled by fashion magazine and celebrity worship culture.

It's all garbage. If you can't afford it, you don't need it.

Justify it this way.

How much is enough?

for big purchases (over $300) i don't buy it as soon as i see it. i save half the price for two pay periods. and after that, if i'm still thinking about it, i have the cash (not credit) to buy it. If not, i have over $300 to go spend somewhere else!!

I wouldn't buy or borrow anything used for one thing. As for purchases, if I want it, I buy it. That is all the justification I need.
