I believe they are really there and that it is unscripted. But you can't put seven "ordinary" people in extraordinary circumstances and expect it to be real. It's definitley all in the editing. I have also heard that producers have asked cast member to do something over because they missed it. And if you notice the parts where they are commenting on themselves they usually are wearing the same outfit. How real is that?

When it started it was real. Well, more real than it is now at least. I used to watch it...what was that like 14 years ago?? Yikes, I'm getting old. I think the first 3 years of it were realistic and interesting. After that it became more drama. Just folks wanted to get on tv. I haven't watched it in years. I saw an episode recently. All they do is drink and have sex. Who cares? It's like the producers give them the alcohol and provides opportunities for them to get sexual...like not enough beds or something.
I know enough to know that reality tv is not real. Everything on tv is staged and edited to look a certain way.

Of course not. The Real World has been total staged nonsense for the better part of 8 or 9 years. They're not looking for real people anymore. They're looking for fame-hungry kids that can be trained to be decent actors. The realest thing about that show is that the trained seals on there are drawing breath.
