I have said the very same thing many times! Unfortunately it isn't the color of the skin but the race, I know I know it's virtually one in the same but there is a lot of tension and hatred between races from our past and if you look at very light black people, even Albino, they are still considered black and treated as such. But the most racist of all people (neo-nazi's and kkk) they will never be found at a tanning salon... they would rather be transparent.

1.White people, like any other group of people, are not all the same. Not all white people like to tan and not all white people criticize "colored" people for being dark.
2.There is still a difference between a tanned white person and a "colored" person.

Coco Chanel made it fashionable to be tan.
Tanning History
"The popularity of tanning can be traced to a single moment in 1923. After cruising from Paris to Cannes, designer Coco Chanel stepped off the Duke of Wellington's yacht with a startling suntan. Chanel had apparently gotten too much sun by accident, but the press and fashion world assumed the immensely influential Frenchwoman was making a fashion statement. 'I think she may have invented sunbathing,' Prince Jean-Louis de Faucigny-Lucigne said. 'At that time, she invented everything.' Soon, daring women in Europe and America were baring their skin to the sun."
[Trivia: Coco's favorite number was 5; Chanel No. 5 was first launched on the 5th of May, 1921.]
Chanel, Coco Gabrielle (1883-1971) French fashion designer [noted for her role in advancing the trend toward simplicity and comfort in the design of women's attire]

I think that it is just a societal trend.
Personally I think that really white skin looks un-healthy. Tan skin makes a white person look active and fit. In the olden days girls wanted white skin b/c dark skin made a girl look tom boyish and wild. Nowdays a wild girl isn't percieved as bad as they were in the 15-1800's.
My final conclusion on the subject is that tan girls are hawt.

I know its crazy. Im white and i dont like it(I mean I like it that Im white but i dont like that tanning thing). I am very light-skinned and I dont get tanned I only get sunburned. And some (white) people often come up to me and say "Oh youre so white"(in a negative way) and they calling me names and Im just like hey you cant be too white. And they tell me to get tanned or wear brown make-up that makes you look like an idiot. I mean imagine a blonde girl like me walking around with dark brown make-up in my face. ewww! Dont get me wrong im not racist and i think that dark skin looks good on dark people but i dont get it either why people like me do that because it only looks stupid.

People that get tans are of the belief that this is a healthier look than the pasty white only as long as it is temporary.

A tan is basically the injury of the first layer of skin, trying to protect it self. But they problay do it so they don't look pale.

We look better with a little tan on our skin, not so pasty and pale. It's like having rosy cheeks, it looks healthy.

get real, we don't want to be charcoal!!!!
But luckily I'm Portuguese and am naturally tan.
Also don't make vast generalization about races, because all are not the same.
That's like saying why do all blacks like chicken???
It's stupid!!!
