a flip-flop is a flat shoe with the Y that goes between your toes. They can be any materiel. Thongs are any shoe that has the Y that goes between your toe ... but ... and here's the big different ... thongs could have heels, be platform, have ankle straps ... etcs.

I don't think there is a difference in style, they just have two different types of names. I prefer flip-flop over thong, thong is a piece of underwear.

Flip flops are rubber or plastic, originally basically beach shoes. Thongs are made of something more shoe-like and usually with a more substantial structure.

many people assume a flip flop is a regular sandal which it is. just your average sandal with support brace across the top of the foot. thongs are slippers with a cord or string that goes in between the big toe and index toe. pretty heinous and ugly since I'd never wear them. much prefer sandals.

Nothing, except flip flop is rubber, and thong isn't. And one has a piece of rubber between the toes.

It depends what part of the country you're in. My family from the West coast says thong and my East Coast family says flip flop. I guess it just depends on who you are talking to. My yes, essentially, they are the same thing.

Nothing. Thongs are what flip flops were called in the 80's before "butt floss" underwear(thongs) were popular.

Nothing, they use to be called thongs and now people call them flip-flops, since there is now such a thing as thongs for underwear : )
