Just want your opinion on it because it was a bit before my time so I didn't have the opportunity to live through it.

While I believe that Jimmy Carter was probably one of the most well meaning of all our presidents. His administration was very ineffective. During the Carter administration the military was cut drastically. We had odd/even gas rationing. The economy was in the toilet. Lastly Americans were held hostage on foreign soil for over a year. Frankly I just cannot remember anything good Jimmy Carter did during his presidency, and he was the last democrat I have supported for the office.

Ron O: Didn't think it was possible to distort that many facts in one post. It is not an illegal or unconstitutional war, Congress granted a formal declaration of war. It wasn't American Troops that were running for the border at the end of the first Gulf War, and the reason we didn't pursue was because of honoring alliances made prior to the war that we would not invade Iraq. That's just 2 inaccuracies, although there are several more I would want to bust your bubble with a little thing like the truth.

He was a very religiosity man He loved this country and wanted the best for it . But it was after Watergate Vietnam and the riots in the US . The country was restless , but yearned for some peace . I think that is why he was voted into office . There was still thermal in the world and Carter was over his head and didn't get the support from his administration . All I can say is he did the best he could ,but it wasn't good enough for most people . Kind of like today with Bush. The way the Republicans didn't like Carter is the way the Democrats don't like Bush . Oh , by the way Reagan made a deal illegally behind the governments back not to release the hostages til he took office . look it up .

Jimmy Carter was a good man. He was, in my opinion, the last person to be in the office of the president that saw himself as a public servant, and didn't use the office to edify some personal need or wish. He cared about the country and its people, but he was a lousy president. He allowed the Panamanians to get back the Panama Canal, so we had to go back in there for Noriega. He allowed our military to fall behind. He bungled the Iranian hostage crisis after they stormed out embassy. Our economy was weak with high inflation, etc etc. A good man, but not right for the job unfortunately. He'll go down in history for the work he's done since leaving the office, a true humanitarian.

In the words of Dickens, "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times". The best of Carter was his massive effort to achieve oil Independence through the promotion of alternative energy resources. He spent billions of federal dollars to fund research, and enormous headway was made. The biggest breakthrough came when big oil saw the handwriting on the wall and dropped prices like a stone. Unfortunately, this wiped out all the fledgeling alternative fuel industries, which of course was their goal.

The biggest blunder was Carter's ill-fated attempt to control inflation by escalating interest rates to a crushing 18-20%. An economist he is not. Those of us struggling through this time period can relate horror stories of the peanut farmer's financial
incompetence.

But the one thing that aggravated me most about smiley-boy was his inability to pronounce nuclear, even though he allegedly had a background in nuclear technology from his stint in the Navy. I used to grit my teeth every time he said, "nuke-you-ler"

Yea, I know, Bush can't say it either.

During the Carter administration, we had relative world peace; Jimmy Carter worked diligently to improve relations between various feuding nations. He left us with a nation that was respected and actually had little national debt. He virtually gave up campaigning for re-election to devote his time to trying to secure freedom for our hostages in Iran.

Then Ronald Reagan made a secret deal with the Iranians (later known as IranContra) so that hostages wouldn't be freed until he was giving his inauguration speech. Disdainfully, he announced the hostages were flying over free air space even as he addressed the nation. The right and moral thing to do would have been to invite Jimmy Carter up to the podium so they could raise arms together in victory and celebration. But Reagan hogged the whole thing for himself, knowing full-well that Carter's dedication to the hostages release had cost him his re-election.

Today, George W. Bush has invaded another sovereign nation - illegally and unconstitutionally. He has slaughtered tens of thousands of Iraqis, all because Dick Cheney wants all the OIL swimming underneath Iraq's sands. He has destroyed America's reputation as a world leader and global peacekeeper. He has put American taxpayers TRILLIONS of dollars in debt. He's lied to the American people, and leaked information to the press when it conveniently fit his agenda. And - oh, yeah - he's allowed more than 2,500 U.S. soldiers to die all because he wants to settle a score with Saddam Hussein for humiliating his daddy, George H.W. Bush, during Desert Storm. Let the Bush dynasty continue until the whole damn family destroys the world! Surely there's a special oil-soaked corner of Hell just waiting for Bush, Cheney and Rumsfeld - and members of the most evil, corrupt, incompetent U.S. Congress in American history!

The Carter administration had integrity, civility, stability, and honesty on its side. The Bush administration has no such traits, nor do most politicians - Republicans or Democrats - today.

President Carter always told the truth to the American People. He was very intelligent and thoughtful. He was a Christian but he did not flaunt it like some people. He was respected all over the World.
