Well it's not my drink of choice, but if you're stuck on a raft in the middle of the ocean and you happen to have a Dixie cup available... I guess it's better than sea water.

Drinking your own urine is VERY toxic. If you absolutely had to, you would be better off to drink someone else's. Your own has been through your own kidneys and your body would see it as mostly toxin. Someone else's urine may contain different elements and not be considered AS toxic. Still a very unhealthy practice BUT would do in an ABSOLUTE EMERGENCY situation.

urine is in fact sterile, and harmless-- although very large amounts, or frequent consumption can cause buildup of uric acid (a nitrogen based compound) which results in severe pain in the joints.

Urine also sometimes gathers germs as it exits the urethra (not a very clean part of the human exterior).

But drinking a small amount is fine; in fact, some people regularly drink the middle third of their morning urine (the first third clears the pipes, and the last is the dregs, more or less), but that sounds pretty disgusting to me.

Drinking your own urine is perfectly safe, and is actually a good strategy if you're at risk of dehydration with no safe water sources anywhere nearby.

I wouldn't do it recreationally, though. It can't be good for your kidneys in the long run.
