I have personally known several people with very real psychic gifts. Such people tend to be seclusive and wary of strangers, as a Rule-of-Thumb, if they advertise, charge, or open shops, give them a miss. Having lost my own mother in 2003 I can understand how you feel, but ultimately you can never "know for sure", in spiritual matters, it all comes down to faith, I would recommend, rather than a medium, you seek a cleric of your faith.

I personally do believe that there are some REAL Mediums but unfortunately there are just loads of charlatans out there who are just trying to take your money.
Medium Paula Roscoe, a member of local paranormal group WISP, was put to the test – twice. James Randi told the two different sets of 50 audiences to only reply with yes/no answers.
After 3.5 hours she gave up blaming it on bad connections.
But the true reason is because with the Yes/No answers she couldn’t cold-read anyone.
John Edwards, as someone mentioned, was believed to be genuine but when put down to tests was proven to be a fraud as he was caught cheating.
Colin Fry was caught cheating during a séance and he even threatened legal action if any information about him cheating was put on TV. It wasn’t, but was leaked another way, and Living TV has seen the ratings of his program ‘The Six Sense’ fall really badly.
The only one who has never cheated, has always fascinated people, and can always produce or provide a connection with ' the other side ', even when he has no idea of where he is going has been Derek Accora.
Like I said before, I believe there are some REAL mediums out there. Who are genuine and really can communicate but there are lots of frauds out there. The best advice I can give you is to read up about Cold Reading – this is the technique the fakes use to produce all this information about you and you’ll leave just thinking ‘Wow… he knew a lot of stuff about me!’ – when the actual truth is he just cold-read you.
Good Luck, what ever you decide to do but be aware of the signs that they’re cold-reading you; otherwise you’ll be wasting your money.

I must warn you that if you go to a medium you will be told astounding truths mixed with lies, which you will then suck in because some of their info is always true. The true bits will overwhelm you into believing the false bits. This is because you will be talking to satan through the medium. Please don't bother, look at the Bible verses on eternal life if you need comfort.

Yes, I do believe some of them are for real. Check out John Edwards. He had a TV show and I have seen him in a concert-like venue. It is truly amazing. But having lost a father and brother, I don't think I would take the chance of actually going to see one. I think most are fake and take advantage of your desires. If you are set on seeing one, ask around, try to find a reliable one and make sure they have good references.
