In New York City, you can't just "get an agent." Most agents go to showcases" to find talent. If they like your performance, they may call you for an interivew/audition in their office.
New York City agents go to the theater almost every night, looking for prospective clients.
If you are a minor, you cannot legally, sign a contract. A parent must sign an agency contract, on your behalf. Are you in SAG or AFTRA?
Where on the east coast? If you mean New York City, buy a copy of the Ross Reports, it lists the names and addresses of Talent Agents and Casting Directors.
It costs $4.00 or $5.00
You can buy it at:
The Drama Book Store
250 West 40 Street at 8th Avenue
New York, New York

I read one of the other replies, and YES, you CAN get an agent without them seeing you perform first. Now, maybe every state is a little different, so you would have to check. But, I am an actor, comedian and former radio show host, and quite familiar with the process in Chicago and NC. Almost every state has a film office (example; NC film office) which Iprobably could give you some advice. Some agents require you to audition for THEM...right in their office. It IS however, a good idea to invite them to a performance when you ARE in a play, etc. Also, agents WILL want head-shots...that is, 8x10 pictures...usually B&W's...unless you're a model, them color is also good. And, they will want a LOT of them. Any other questions, let me know. You can reach me through my website at www.johnevers.net
